How to Find Mac Address using IP Address in Windows 7,8.1,10

Hello, here is another simple tutorial on how to find out mac address of a device very easily using just ip address. Finding a mac address of the network that you are connected to is very easy. You can find 3 mac addresses associated with a laptop which are Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.  Mac address is a physical address which can not be changed, it is provided by the manufacturer. Whereas IP address can even change mac address.

So, What is MAC Address?

MAC Address or The MediaAccess Control (MAC) is a binary number used to uniquely identify computer network adapters. These addresses are embedded into the hardware by the manufacturer and cannot be changed. Most of the mac address look like 1A:2B:3C:4D:5E:6F (just an example). TCP/IP networks use both MAC addresses and IP Address but for separate purposes. A MAC address remains fixed to the device's hardware while the IP address for that same device can be changed depending on its TCP/IP network configuration.

So, what is an IP Address?

An IP address is something which allow one computer (or device) to communicate with another via the Internet. IP addresses allow the location of literally billions of digital devices that are connected to the Internet to be pinpointed and differentiated from other devices. In the same sense that someone needs your mailing address to send you a letter, a remote computer needs your IP address to communicate with your computer.

Why Do You need MAC Address of any device?

   1.   To Determine the Manufacturer
   2.   To Spoof the mac address for some ill intent to bypass the network security.
   3.   To Stop someone from accessing your network.

You cannot determine the mac address of all devices, you can only determine the mac address of the networks that you are connected to. It often isn't possible to determine the MAC address of a computer from its IP address alone because these two addresses originate from different sources. However, if the computers are connected to the same TCP/IP network, you can determine the MAC address through a technology called Address Resolution Protocol.

How to Find the Mac Address of a Device Using IP Address

  1)  Open Command Prompt (CTRL+R à CMD à Enter)
  2)  Find Your IP Address from ipconfig/all
  3)  Type ping is IP Address, This is done to establish connection with all devices.

  4)  now type “arp -a” in command prompt

  5)  Physical address located next to the ip address that you are looking for is your required mac address.
